Anyone ever cook Turnip Greens and like them?
I just bought some thinking DD might like them. She likes cooked spinach. I've never had them, and would probably turn my nose up if they were offered to me. However, I think if there is a good recipe it might just be a new veggie in our house. Any help???
Cook them the way you do spinach, but add a little vinegar to the water, and then salt, pepper and butter at the end.
And you liked them? Thanks. I'll fix it tonight and see what DD and I think.
Well, they aren't my favorites ;) but not bad. I prefer spinach instead.
I made them. DD hated them ROFLOL, but what a trooper for trying. You should have seen her face LOL. I kinda liked them. I found a recipe that used salt pork (but I used bacon). It was pretty good. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will post the recipe. I'll probably cook them again.
Any true southern recipe will start with pork fat..heck, with pork fat you can eat most anything! LOL Good for your dd, I am not a big fan of "greens" either.
my dh luvs them but said after cooking boiling for fifteen minutes u drain them and start over with all the salt pork and onion and vineagar ... says this takes some of the strong bitterniss out of it ...
I added both onion and vinegar during the cooking. But never drained any of it.
The best pot of greens has lots of salt and pepper and add a little hot pepper juice (vinegar) and onions and a couple pieces bacon cut up(no need to cook). If the greens are fresh, rinse, rinse, rinse, and then cover in water and above ingredients and bring to a boil and simmer for about 1 1/2 hours. No need to drain... cook a big pan of cornbread and dip a piece in the "pot liquor"... DELICIOUS!!! Even my 8 year old "picky" eater loves them!!
flamom, does that stand for FLORIDA mom? You certainly sound like a true southern cook! My mother is from Alabama, I was born and raised in Florida. Mom taught us how to cook and it is diffinitely southern. Just love that style cooking--although it requires lots of bacon grease and the like, butter and cream-and salt too, but I tend to go light there. Yuummmmmm
