New Requirement for Mailing to Military Addresses
New Requirement for Mailing to Military Addresses Effective immediately, all mailings to APO/FPO addresses must include a return address and the full name of the addressee. The Department of Defense will not accept any mail that is addressed generically, e.g., to "Any Service Member", "Any Soldier", "Sailor", "Airman", "Marine", etc.
I also heard on my all-news station yesterday and today that the large number of "care" packages being sent to service members in the Middle East is clogging up the military mail system and delaying delivery of mail because people are sending packages to any name/APO address they can get even if they don't know the person. I think it is important to send such things to the troops, but it might be better to send them through the Red Cross or a military or associated organization rather than directly mailing, unless you are sending to a family member or close friend, who certainly deserves the "personal" touch.
When my DH went to mail our packages he was told that 1. our full name and address was to be on it 2. that if for some reason they wasn't able to deliver the packages that we needed to make sure it was returned to us. 3. any packages that didn't have a return address on it would be destroyed. 4. that they didn't want any packages that had just "any soldier" on it. That they would be destroyed also.
