Gas Prices

Moms View Message Board: The Fox Hole (War-Related Discussion): The Front Line (Personal Opinions on Hot Topics/Debating Allowed Here): Gas Prices
By Mechelle on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:20 pm:

Dh just asked me if I needed gas in my car. It could hold a few dollars worth.
He said the gas prices will probably soar as of tomorrow, beginning of the war starting and etc.
I remember a lot of places got in trouble for "Gas Gouging" when 9/11 happened.
Not trying to start a debating issue or anything, just wanting to know what you all think if they will raise the gas prices on us or what.
Just in case i am filling mine up tonight.

By Karen55 on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:46 pm:

How much is gas where you live? I just filled up at Sam's and it was $1.48 a gallon.

By Melanie on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:49 pm:

$1.48??? That's it, I'm moving! LOL We're up to $2.29 for the cheap stuff!

Mechelle, yes, I am anticipating it to go up yet again when the war begins. But hopefully it will be over quickly and they will come back down again. Under $2.00. That's all I ask. LOL.

By Colette on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:50 pm:

The cheapest I can find is 1.63. I am trying to buy only from companies that do not import oil from the middle east.

By Trina on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:53 pm:

I paid $1.85 yesterday for Regular. Wow, Melanie! That's outrageous!

By Andi on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 10:08 pm:

I paid $2.15 for the cheap stuff yesterday.

By Shellyg on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 11:08 pm:

I just put $25.00 in my truck. Guess how much gas it added up to?? Only a half a tank!

By Mechelle on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 11:14 pm:

OMG!! Karen, $1.48 I haven't seen that in probably over a year!

Were up to now $1.80 per gallon.BTW we are in Illinois...
I filled up my tank Saturday, and it costed me $23.00 I about flipped.

Om Andi! Thats expensive!!!

By Mechelle on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 01:28 am:

no.....Let me rephrase that.........it's a $1.69 here in town. Sopposed to jump to $1.80

By Ginnyk on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 05:09 am:

I anticipate it will go up. I got half a tank yesterday at $1.659. I will be very surprised if it goes down quickly. My cynical opinion is that the oil companies will find every excuse they can to keep the prices up (and the natural gas companies). Glad we are at least near the end of heating season, though for many of you I guess we are getting into air conditioning season. I think we are going to see all utility prices go up, up, up.

By Familyman on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 08:05 am:

The natural gas situation is entirely domestic so the war has no effect on that at all. You can blame that on the winter. Did you know that natural gas storage in the US is at a 10 year low? That says bad things for next year as well. But I digress.
World oil prices aren't in general set by oil companies. If they were then they'd never sell oil at a loss which when it gets below $15 a barrel they do. If you want to complain about gasoline prices then you need to talk to gasoline distribution companies, some of which are owned by oil companies but many are independent. And lets not forget that price at the pump is decided by the station owner. They certainly react to world events but they also react wonderfully to hysteria. Remember $4 a gallon on the afternoon of 9/11? That was completely station owner/hysteria driven, had nothing to do with the oil companies at all.
Oh, and my DW drills oil wells for a living which is why high oil prices don't really bother me much. Costs us a few dollars extra to fill the car but it's great job security.

By Tonya on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 08:18 am:

I paid $1.85 for the mid-grade stuff the cheap stuff is at $1.69 right now.

By Jenn on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 08:24 am:

Cheap gas here in Delaware is $1.57.

By Joy~bundles on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 10:04 am:

The cheapy gas station in my area has 87 octane for $1.67 right now. The rest of 'em are charging $1.79 for the same stuff.

By Kay on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 10:49 am:

Here in central Texas, the regular at my station (Citgo) was $1.55. I usually don't put the higher priced gas in my van unless we're planning to spend some time on the highway. Sometimes, I'm not even sure that makes a difference.

By Familyman on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 11:13 am:

Kay, it doesn't make any difference. In fact gas with higher octane actually has less burn energy in it. The only reason you ever need higher octane gasoline is if you engine is designed to use it. I could go into why a particual engine would need it but suffice to say that if your oweners manual doesn't say you need it then you don't. Use cheap gas.

By Palmbchprincess on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 12:57 pm:

$1.55 was the cheapest last night, who knows what it's up to today!

By Mechelle on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 03:35 pm:

I use the cheapest gas there is........Not much of a difference to me.
Just the higher octane and more money out of muy pocket.
I haven't seen the gas prices today though.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 04:13 pm:

We filled up both cars yesterday at $2.00 even per gallon for the regular unleaded. Outrageous! We are going to try to keep the tanks topped of as much as possible during the next weeks. DH commutes about 75 miles a day, so he uses lots of gas in his car :(

By Candace on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 04:24 pm:

We buy from Texaco/Shell and 87 octane is $1.71 around here. Hopefully it won't go up too much. The Spring Breakers wouldn't be happy! :)

By Kay on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 08:28 pm:

Thanks for the advice on gas, Seth - hey, if I don't have to use the more expensive stuff, I won't! :)
