I got this picture from another web site.

This is off topic (sorry), but Bea's picture reminded me of it. My DH is convinced he saw an American eagle in a swamp area here in Louisiana yesterday perched atop a tree, and then it flew, and it was huge. He said it was a breathtaking, totally awesome sight to see. It looked just like the bird in Bea's picture above with the solid white head. It's wing span was extremely wide, and my DH estimates the bird was really big, about 4 feet high when sitting on the branch. He took some digital photos of the bird, and he's going to bring the disk home tomorrow. If any of them are decent, I'll post them. But I was wondering if this really could have been an American eagle. I've done very limited research on it so far. Thought I'd ask you ladies in case anyone knew anything about them. Aren't they endangered? Is it unusual to see them in Louisiana, or do they "fly south for the winter"? I know their mating season begins in late March, and this bird was flying around, but basically staying in the same vicinity, so I'm wondering if it wasn't nesting. DH and I felt like we should TELL someone. We didn't know if we should call the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans or some other government agency. But then again, if this is not at all unusual, then I guess we don't need to call anyone. It's just in my 47 years on this earth and here in Louisiana, I have NEVER seen an eagle in the wild. I find it pretty exciting! BTW, those were both beautiful pictures that speak volumes ... I love 'em. Thanks, Jenn and Bea.
It cant hurt to call the zoo. We get them up here along the river during nesting season.
Pam, by all means call the zoo. And send them the digital photos as they have the best chance of identifying the bird. I don't know what the range of American Eagles is, but for quite a while they were an endangered species and much work is going into helping the species recover and have enough of them around so that they are no longer endangered, so I think the zoo would appreciate hearing from you. Ask to talk to the person in charge of large birds. If they don't respond well, come back here and I'm sure we can help you find the people who work most closely with American Eagles.
Bea, Your picture is amazing. Bubbles, I can't wait to see your pictures. I love seeing pictures of eagles and just about everything. I agree with everyone about calling the zoo.
If I recall correctly, the American Eagle is no longer on the endangered list. But don't hold me to that. They do live down south. I have seen several here in FL. Usually in cypress trees along rivers. Don't know about where you are, but I don't see why not.
Pam - we have bald eagles up here in Mass. A nesting pair along side the Merrimack River. They're about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall, with a wing span of up to 6 feet. If you're fortunate enough to see one, it's a wonderful experience! Consider yourselves lucky! We have tons of red tail hawks too, and every so often you can sometimes catch a glimpse of a wild turkey (which are HUGE!) meandering along the interstate.
This is the best picture he took. It's taken from so far away that it's not easy to see it very well, but it sure in the heck resembles an eagle to me! Note the white head, and DH said he had a huge golden beak. Here it is:
What do you guys think?
He's sitting in a tree alongside the Mississippi River.
Looks like an eagle to me! Lucky you to have caught it on camera.
