When ds was 5 months old, I was offered a position in the home of friends of ours to babysit their 3 beautiful girls, Samantha, age 6, Rachel, 4, and Madison, 1. Samantha had been born with a defect in her heart. At the age of 11 months, she underwent open heart surgery, but it didn't totally correct the problem, as her parents were not to find out until much later in her life. Then at 2, she was hospitalized with spiral meningitis. She nearly died. She dealt with a series of setbacks in her development, including hearing and speech impediments, and was very susceptible to colds and flu. But she was always a trooper, and took them all in stride. She never suffered. When she was 11, her parents were told her illness was fatal. She died 4 days before Christmas in 2002, at the age of 12. It was hard for me to hear the news of her death, as I had fallen out of touch with the family. I have had this poem for more than a year, and I finally got up the nerve to give it to her parents. Sammi would have been 15 this year. Samantha She touched our hearts She opened our minds Though she only was here For a very short time A smile, a hug A kiss in the air She never would know The burden she would bear Her memory is one Of a bright happy girl Who’d never let ugliness Into her little world She would draw you in And offer you cake Then ask for a ride To the store and the bank She’d always found good In everyone she’d meet Her manner so polite Her smile so sweet While her passing was tragic Her life was a miracle She’d spread all her magic And made the world beautiful If I could tell her Just one last thing I’d say, “Thank-you Samantha, Now, go get your wings”
Lisa, that's just beautiful!! It will mean even more to them now, because you're keeping her memory alive when most people have probably backed away.
Very beautiful poem! I am sure she is in heaven smiling down at you for remembering her so sweetly.
Awww...Lisa, that IS beautiful!
Lisa that is just beautiful.
